Let’s face it: there are certain spaces that demand more risk-taking from designers than others. For architects and others looking to make a bold statement with dramatic impact, lighting is a powerful way to achieve that effect.
Whether it’s for hotels, restaurants, or lobbies, Australia’s Yellow Goat Designs produces some astonishing custom pieces that are more akin to sculpture than lighting fixtures. (Shown above: the company’s Magic Carpet.) Here are a few great examples (because we couldn’t pick just one favorite).
Radiant, multi-colored acrylic pieces are strung together with glass and a mirror composite with LED downlights to create what Yellow Goat calls As It Is In Heaven and claims is “our best work to date.”
40 Cigarettes is made up of 40 different shapes repeated 20 times, cut from mirror-polished aluminum plates. Each piece resembles an LED-lit puddle of mercury.
The striking 90 Degrees is a gorgeous piece with over 200 right-angle, bent stainless steel tubes that emerge from a satin-finished, silver central capsule fitted with an LED light. Perfect for a restaurant (shown here) — or a moon landing, perhaps.
With Bagels, Yellow Goat plays with reflected light from the underside of these aluminum donuts to create soft, waterlike reflections on the ceiling. “Very meditative,” they say — like any good bagel should be.
