Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is no laughing matter. Ask the average Scandinavian during the depth of winter, and she’ll tell you the absence of daylight begins to wear on the psyche, resulting in feelings of depression. In fact, according to a CNN article, nearly 20 percent of the population of Sweden suffers from SAD, and nearly 500,000 experience it in the UK each year.
It seems fitting then that Finland-born Ville Kokkonen, design director at Artek, designed his WHITE Collection of lighting with human health in mind. Artek’s Bright Light 1 desk lamp (shown above) employs light therapy, exposing the user to specific wavelengths (or the full spectrum) of light that mimics daylight and is certified to address SAD.
And while many lighting fixtures tend to lean toward gaudy designs that have inspired an ugly lamp contest, the minimalist form of the WHITE Collection allows the light to work its magic without any eyesores. And that’s something we can all be happy about.
